TECHNOLOGY EXTENSION TEAM ( TET)
C-DIT understands the necessity of extending technology to tap the vast human resource of the State and help them translate their potential to bring about larger benefits for the State. The Technology Extension Team provides avenues to meet this requirement of the young populace in the State. Offering a rich gamut of courses through the C-DIT Educational Partners (CEPs) spread across all the districts is one of the major functional areas of this team. With the CEPs numbering about 300, CDIT holds the record of having the largest number of educational partners under any similar Government institution in the State. Apart from conducting and administering as many as 18 IT courses, the Team prepares quality course material required thereof. Industrial Automation and Net work Engineering courses are the new areas, which offered through the Resolute Education Campus equipped with state of the art facilities. The TET is also entrusted with the corporate training ventures for the specific target groups with the financial assistance of Govt. of India and other State Govt. departments. The Job portal  under TET facilitate for the easy access of the job opportunities in the IT Sector.

ACTIVITIES

The Technology Extension Team offers 18 IT courses of  Post Graduate, Diploma and Certificate levels through 300 C-DIT Educational Partners(CEPs) spread across all the districts in the State. Besides, high end courses like Industrial Automation and Instrumentation have been offered through the CDIT Resolute Education Campus  located at Thrissur. Resolute Education  Campus, the new venture of CDIT based at Thrissur is equipped with state of the art facilities for the conduct of  such courses. The Academic Committee under TET is being providing guidance and facilitation for the updating of syllabus and curriculum, induction of new courses and other reforms to be made in the process of examination and certification.  The Centralised Examination and the Centralised Valuation are the salient features of the CDIT courses. Apart from offering regular IT courses through the CEP centres, TET also undertakes corporate training programmes of  various Govt. Institutions  focusing specified target group.

ON GOING MAJOR PROJECTS

1. Training in Information Technology for the BEd/MEd holders among SC/ST communities in the State with the funding of Department of Information Technology, Govt. of India. The project envisages to impart training to 600 candidates by 2009-10. This project is designed and conceived by the Cybersri division of CDIT.

2. As part of the External Tie up with the Continuing Education Cell of the Polytechnic Colleges under the Directorate of Technical Education, Govt. of Kerala, CDIT offer seven courses through the  CE Cell of Polytechnic Colleges across the State.   1. An industrial working environment for engineering college and polytechnic and other technical education systems.
    Polytechnic, Engineering colleges and other technical education systems could realize the importance of the instrumentation and automation programmes. However, most of the technical institutions in Kerala have very limited/poor lab facilities which doesn’t meet the requirements of current industrial standards, including neoteric instrumentation equipments, automation software like SCADA, PLC and automation plants. Considering the demand for instrumentation and control engineers from industries, the output of the qualified instrumentation and control engineers from the engineering colleges and polytechnics are much less and these institutions fail to provide a state-of-the-art lab facility. Moreover as the technology changes, syllabus and the latest infrastructure are also frequently need to be upgraded.  This lead to the  students not being able to work in the real time industrial automation companies. That is why CDIT REC centre come in to being, with a plan to introduce new courses in the field of industrial automation and address the problem of lack of qualified personnel in industrial automation zone. Also it allows the students to come to CDIT automation lab and research their dream projects.
  2. Technology for non-technical students: a real job oriented technical education opening for non-technical students!!!
    As engineering educators we too seldom interact with students from non- technical majors. This gives us a narrow perspective and exacerbates the problem. CDIT has designed and offered a course centered on the development of industrial automation technology. We study the effects of instrumentation and automation and draw parallels with recent technological developments. The course has been presented twice and is open to students from engineering, science, business, arts and humanities majors. Substantial thought must be given to class topics and exercises appropriate for this diverse group of students. We have a variety of modular courses for Student level as well as for experienced candidate.

    CDIT REC is mainly started with an aim to take up the responsibility of facilitation support partner (FSP) for CDIT industrial automation and network engineering programmes by providing required state-of-the-art lab facilities.


Salient Features of REC lab


1. SCADA LAB

SCADA stands for Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition. It generally refers to an industrial control system: a computer system monitoring and controlling a process. The process can be industrial, infrastructure or facility based as described below:
  • Industrial processes include those of manufacturing, production, power generation, fabrication, and refining, and may run in continuous, batch, repetitive, or discrete modes.
  • Infrastructure processes may be public or private, and include water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, oil and gas pipelines, electrical power transmission and distribution, and large communication systems.
  • Facility processes occur both in public facilities and private ones, including buildings, airports, ships, and space stations. It monitor and control HVAC, access, and energy consumption. 

The SCADA lab specially designed for people who want a thorough understanding of industrial automation using SCADA software and how to interface various PLCs according to the industry requirements.


2.  PLC INTERFACING LAB

A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) or programmable controller is a digital computer used for automation of electromechanical processes, such as control of machinery on factory assembly lines, control of amusement rides, or control of lighting fixtures. PLCs are used in many different industries and machines such as packaging and semiconductor machines. Programs to control machine operation are typically stored in battery-backed or non-volatile memory. A PLC is an example of a real time system since output results must be produced in response to input conditions within a specified time, otherwise unintended operation will result.

The functionality of the PLC has evolved over the years to include sequential relay control, motion control, process control, distributed control systems and networking.
The most common application is for individual machine control but can range to full plant control linking several PLCs together. On a particular machine, speed, options, Safety, operator interface, pneumatic, hydraulic, electricity are some items that may be controlled. PLCs have several different types of input and output cards depending on the type out interface desired. All machines, room temperatures, power monitoring, even security can be joined by linking several PLCs. These can then be displayed and controlled by a single Graphical User Interface (GUI) o a standard Personal Computer.

3. NETWORKING LAB

While most people associate the term “computer networking” with only local area network setup, but local area network administration place vital role in computer networking.  Security is a part of every network administrators job, whether there is confidential data stored on computers that must be protected or there are user who need to be prevented for deleting vital operating system and application file, network security is a huge and complex subject

That is why CDIT REC lab is designed to impart a deep and lasting appreciation for the mechanics of networking. This is a quantum leap beyond merely preparing you for a certification program; moreover it will help you for thinking your way through the myriad challenges that await information technology professional in the real world.

4. ROUTER LAB

Wide area net work (WANs) and their component technologies continue to increase in importance. Not very many years ago about the only need most companies had for WANs was to internet work two or more work locations. For example, a company with only a single work location might need a robust connection to the internet to support marketing, customer care and many other functions.

5. WIRELESS LAB

A wireless LAN is a closely grouped system of devices that communicate via radio waves instead of wires. Wireless LANs typically assigned to replace wired computer networks, providing users with more flexibility and freedom of movement within the work space, using the company intranet or even the world wide web from any where on the company campus without relying on the availability of wired cables and connection.

6. PLC/SCADA Controlled Process Plant

The unique feature of REC Automation lab is the PLC Controlled Process Plant, which is only one of its kinds in South India. This Plant is a far advanced model equipped with pressure, temperature, flow, pH measurement and viscosity sensors.
The data from these sensors are transmitted through electronic modems to a Master Control Room for monitoring. Various controllers and Actuators have been used to take corrective measures and control system.
This advanced process plant facility is built in central Kerala with vision to train engineering students and working professionals in various control and SCADA Applications without traveling outside of our state.
